This is a trick I learned when my mom redid her kitchen a few years ago. You've probably done something similar if you ever collected pennies as a kid.
Here's what you will need:
- your old hinges and screws
- distilled white vinegar
- water
- a glass casserole dish
- a wire brush (optional)
Step 2: Fill with 1 part vinegar and 2 parts water until all the pieces are covered.
Step 3: Let sit overnight.
Step 4: Rinse and dry each piece and marvel at their prettiness!
It is really that simple! The acid in the vinegar breaks down any buildup your hinges have experienced over the years. If you look closely you can even see it working because little bubbles will form around the metal. This especially works well with brass and copper.
In our case, I was just doing this to clean our brass looking hinges before spraying them with chrome paint. We are switching door pulls and wanted the hinges to match in color. Well when I checked them the next morning, I noticed the brass color was literally chipping off and chrome was shining through. Apparently, these babies were already painted and the vinegar ate away the bond.
So I was able to use the wire brush and running water to restore our hinges to the exact color we needed. Score!
