Summary from GoodReads: When Mallory discovers that her boyfriend, Jeremy, is cheating on her with an online girlfriend, she swears off boys. She also swears off modern technology. Inspired by a list of goals her grandmother made in 1962, Mallory decides to "go vintage" and return to a simpler time (when boyfriends couldn't cheat on you online). She sets out to complete grandma's list: run for pep club secretary, host a dinner party, sew a homecoming dress, find a steady, do something dangerous. But the list is trickier than it looks. And obviously finding a steady is out . . . no matter how good Oliver (Jeremy's cousin) smells. But with the help of her sister, she'll get it done. Somehow. Lindsey Leavitt perfectly pairs heartfelt family moments, laugh-out-loud humor, and a little bit of romance in this delightful contemporary novel.
The Verdict: This was the first book I read in 2013 and there is nothing like starting the new year off with a great book. This book was beautiful.
I love how each character was developed and the dialogue and actions felt genuine. Even the pronounced tool Jeremy had multiple layers.
I loved Mallory's challenge of living life like in 1962. It inspired me to want to try a similar challenge. But then I loved her growth and realization that being a teen is hard in any decade.
The side plot of her grandmother's story was very well developed and with out giving away any spoilers was fitting to her overall life and personality even though I never saw it coming.
I especially liked Mallory's personal growth. I love that she didn't need to have a guy to be happy and she wanted time to figure herself out. That was such a prefect message for teen girls and I will whole heartedly be recommending this book :-)
I received a free review copy of this book from the publishers via NetGalley but the opinions expressed here are my own.
