Summary from GoodReads: 1. Never trust anyone.
2. Remember they are always searching.
3. Don’t get involved.
4. Keep your head down.
5. Don’t fall in love.
Five simple rules. Ariane Tucker has followed them since the night she escaped from the genetics lab where she was created, the result of combining human and extraterrestrial DNA. Ariane’s survival—and that of her adoptive father—depends on her ability to blend in among the full-blooded humans in a small Wisconsin town, to hide in plain sight at her high school from those who seek to recover their lost (and expensive) “project.”
But when a cruel prank at school goes awry, it puts her in the path of Zane Bradshaw, the police chief’s son and someone who sees too much. Someone who really sees her. After years of trying to be invisible, Ariane finds the attention frightening—and utterly intoxicating. Suddenly, nothing is simple anymore, especially not the rules…

The Verdict: I think it's kind of funny that Hyperion is releasing two books with similar titles that both feature girls in hiding back to back to each other. That being said The Rules is quite unique in it's premise as a book. I think it is perfectly targeted to readers from my generation who were big fans of the teen drama Roswell and the younger generation who watched Kyle XY.
I loved the alternating POV's and do not think the story could have been told the same without that. It was fun to see how Ariane and Zane interpreted the same situations and to be the omniscient bystander to the who story.
I was definitely surprised with the climax of the plot and didn't anticipate how everything would turn out. What I especially liked was how Kade chose to end it. The ending allows for The Rules to perfectly stand on it's own but it also leaves an interest for what comes next in Ariane's life. Clearly this is part of a series but I could gather no information on what the next book will be about - if it will be a direct sequel to Ariane's story or if it will be about other subjects of the Project Paper Doll experiments.
For me that kind of ending is perfect because it left me satisfied but also eager to see what this author will do next :)

I received a free review copy of this book from the publishers via NetGalley but the opinions expressed here are my own.
